Here’s the revolutionary baseball card issue from more than 30 years ago that turned the industry on its head, neatly presented here in the form of six sealed factory sets that still have the original cellophane packaging on the exterior, along with six unsealed sets. Even with that intact seal, we can assure you that inside each are 800 cards and the attendant iconic holograms, all precisely as issued way back when. This is the iconic 1989 Upper Deck set that parlayed remarkably crisp action photography with startling new printing technology and the inclusion of a certain Rookie card as the No. 1 that fateful year. With apparent sure-fire Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. leading off, the 1989 Upper Deck issue was offered in packs that sold for $1 each, confounding hobby experts who lamented the dramatic departure from the traditional nickel-and-dimes approach. The hobby never looked back and Mr. Griffey dutifully made his way to Cooperstown, making his card – and by extension the entire set – a hobby classic.
