This is a fascinating group of vintage and modern hockey cards that ranges from 1963 to modern times, with a theme of Hall of Famers by the hundreds, including many of the biggest names from several different eras. Nine slabbed cards headline with the same HOF theme; a second element of Hall of Famers includes the likes of Bobby Orr, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky and a bevy of modern or soon-to-be official Hall of Famers. Most of the vintage cards are Topps, but there are a few O-Pee-Chees as well; condition is broadly Excellent to Ex-Mt for the 1960s and 1970s, with some below and some Near-Mint, while the modern-era cards are typically Near-Mint or better. The modern group obviously touches the wide range of current manufacturers. It's a massive group with all the earmarks of an old-time auction lot, demanding a good deal of close scrutiny but offering substantial rewards for the diligent bidder. Here’s a breakdown – Slabbed cards (9); 1963 Topps No. 23 Hull – PSA 8, 1967 Topps No. 24 Berenson – PSA 8, 1970 Topps Stamps Orr – SGC 60, 1971 Topps No. 45 – Dryden – SGC 55, 1972 Topps No. 100 Orr – SGC 60, 1976 Topps No. 115 Trottier – SGC 84, 1982 O-Pee-Chee Hawerchuk Rookie – SGC 84, 1984 O-Pee-Chee Yzerman Rookie – SGC 80 and 1986 O-Pee-Chee Lemieux – SGC 70. A small subgroup of about four dozen raw vintage includes: 1969 Topps cards of Mikita, Henry and Savard; 1970 Topps Phil Esposito, Beliveau (Very Good) and Park; 1971 Topps (14), including LaFleur Rookie (O-Pee-Chee – Fair), Mikita (2), Esposito, Dryden, Parent (3) and Plante; 1972 Topps (10), including LaFleur, Clarke (2), Plante, Esposito, and Dryden (2); 1973 Topps Barber Rookie (3); 1974 Topps (4), with Potvin Rookie (3) and McDonald Rookie; and 1975 Topps (8), including Mikita, Potvin and Robinson. The largest element of more than 550 cards is mostly modern and almost entirely Hall of Famers or stars who will ultimately be Hall of Famers, plus stars and specials – A breakdown of some keys and vintage (Topps unless otherwise indicated): 1) Bobby Orr (7), including 1971, 1972, 1974, 1977 and three League Leaders; 2) Bobby Hull (11), including 1969 (3), 1970, 1971, 1977 O-Pee-Chee (2), 1979 (2) and two League Leaders; 3) Howe (5), including 1970 Topps Stamp, 1970, 1971 and 1977 O-Pee-Chee; 4) Gretzky (37); 5) Brett Hull (26); 6) Bourque (28); 7) Trottier (5), including 1976 Rookie (3), 1977 and 1981; 8) Lemieux (4) 1988 (2), 1989 and 1990 Upper Deck; 9) Coffey (30); 10) Messier (8), including 1983 O-Pee-Chee, 1984 O-Pee-Chee and 1985 O-Pee-Chee; 11) Bossy (9); 12) Yzerman (11), including 1984 Rookie (5); 13) Jagr (10); 14) Fedorov (6) and 15) Roy (6).
