Presented is a true Depression Era scarcity, the unique die-cut National Chicle Batter Up issue, found here in an extraordinary near set, missing only five cards. The 2 3/8-by-3 ¼-inch First Series cards are actually ¼-inch taller than their Series II counterparts, and thus the condition breakdowns are similarly separated. Four cards arrive in PSA slabs - No. 27 Mel Ott PSA 1.5, No. 28 Jimmie Foxx PSA 2, No. 35 Rogers Hornsby PSA 2 and No. 57 Hank Greenberg PSA 2, with Foxx's other single (No. 144) receiving a N9 designation. Series One comes out to 21 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 47 percent Very Good to VG-Ex, 24 percent Good and 8 percent below; Series Two is 18 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 14 percent Very Good, 23 percent Good, 7 percent Fair and 39 percent Poor. In the second series, almost all the cards deemed Poor are linked to cards with the top half of the die-cut missing, often with homemade black cardboard or even art textured backgrounds. Breakdown of keys: No. 1 Berger – VG-Ex, 5 Hubbell – VG-Ex, 6 Terry – VG-Ex, 8 Bottomley – VG, 14 Traynor – VG, 17 Waner – Good, 23 Gomez – Good, 24 Averill – Good, 25 Cochrane – VG, 30 Dickey – Fair, 31 Grove – VG, 32 Cronin – Ex, 33 Frisch – Ex (three Green and two Blue), 34 Simmons – Good, 42 Gehringer – VG, 45 Lazzeri – VG, 84 Gomez – Poor, 98 Moses/Webb – Poor, 111 Hayes/Lyons – Poor, 115 Andrews/Bottomley – Ex, 117 Dickey – Poor, 122 Lindstrom – Poor, 125 Martin – Poor, 129 Lombardi – Poor, 130 Gehringer – Poor, 136 Hartnett – Poor, 138 Herman – Poor, 143 Dean – Fair, 145 Medwick – VG, 149 Berg – Poor, 156 Durocher – Poor, 157 Lloyd – Ex, 179 Bottomley – Good, 180 Jackson – Fair, 183 Cronin – VG and 185 Klein – Poor.
