November 18, 2021: Fall Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/18/2021
Offered is a remarkably comprehensive and almost complete array of the famed Wheaties “cards” from the beginning years of the company’s fabled alliance with Major League Baseball, cards that adorned the back of boxes of the popular breakfast cereal for many generations. The years from 1935-39 ranged in varying sizes aligning with the cereal boxes, but generally were from 6 or 6 ½ inches by anywhere from 6 to 8 inches, each and every one dependent upon the scissoring skills of the youth of America. The offered array is an extraordinary opportunity to pick up so many complete or near sets of the legendary cards in highly collectible condition, headlined by a pair of Gehrig cards found in SGC holders. The cards have been handsomely aligned (not affixed) to a striking navy-blue cardboard backing, some with attractive orange accents, making for a spectacular presentation of this important issue. The breakdown: 1935 Series One “Fancy Frame with Script Signature” (27/27) – generally Very Good to Excellent, with a few with erratic cuts – Cochrane Black Hat – Near-Mint, Cochrane White Hat – Ex-Mt (erratic cut), Dean – Ex-Mt, both Deans – VG (erratic cut), Foxx – Ex (erratic cut), Gehrig – SGC Authentic, Grove – Ex-Plus, Klein – Ex-Mt (erratic cut) and Ott – Good; 1936 Series Three (12/12) – mostly Very Good to Excellent, with eight of the 12 with somewhat erratic cuts – Averill – Good, Cochrane – Fair, Greenberg – VG, Hubbell – Fair and Foxx – Ex-Mt; 1936 Series Four (12/12) – same condition description – Gehrig – SGC 2, Gehringer – Fair, Grove – Good, Medwick – Poor, Rowe – Fair; 1936 Series Five – Foxx has erratic cut; 1937 Series Six (12/12, plus box front) – most with some awkward cutting, group is generally Fair to Good, with DiMaggio – Fair; 1937 Series Seven (12/12, with box front) – missing the four PCL players – Demaree and Lombardi – Poor, DiMaggio – Fair, rest VG to Ex; 1937 Series Eight (8, plus box front) – DiMaggio cut short to 8 1/8 inches, Feller and Gehringer have erratic cuts, and Hubbell and Medwick are Poor; 1937 Series Nine “The Color Series” (16, plus box cover) – broadly Excellent with a few Ex-Mt, some erratic cutting, DiMaggio – VG, poorly cut, Grove – Poor, Hubbell – Poor and Martin – Fair; 1938 Series Ten (16/16, with box cover) – DiMaggio – VG with erratic cut, Feller – Fair, poorly cut, Travis – poorly cut, Hubbell – Fair, Bell – poorly cut, Lombardi – poorly cut, Grove – Poor, Dean – Fair and Gehringer – Good; 1938 Series Eleven (8/8, with box cover) – three or four with erratic cut; and 1939 Series Twelve (9/9) – Lombardi – erratic cut, Gomez – Poor, Foxx – Ex-Plus, Medwick – erratic cut, Greenberg – Good, erratic cut, Ott – Ex and Vaughan – Fair.
