Here’s one of the great minor-league issues from the postwar period, the 1952 Mother’s Cookies set that features players from the Pacific Coast League, which was afforded uncommonly prestigious status at the time prior to the move to the West Coast of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants in 1958. The offered set is in an attractive mostly Ex-Mt to Near-Mint condition, with the emphasis to the upper end of the spectrum and a few cards falling below. The 2 13/16-by-3 ½-inch cards boast vivid color backgrounds that bleed to the edge of borderless cards that are also distinguished by rounded corners. The first of two PCL issues by Mother’s Cookies is headlined by cards of Chuck Connors, who would later switch careers and gain fame as television’s “The Rifleman,” another of Hall of Famer Mel Ott and a third of former major league slugger and West Coast empresario Lefty O'Doul. The breakdown of keys and condition anomalies: No. 1 – Very Good, 4 Connors – Near-Mint, 11 – Nr-Mt, 13 – Ex-Mt, 18 Gordon – VG, 23 – VG, 25 O’Doul – Ex-Mt, 28 – VG, 29 – VG, 32 Ott – Ex-Mt, 34 – Nr-Mt, 35 – VG, 37 – Ex-Mt, 39 – VG, 43 – Nr-Mt, 51 – VG, 52 – VG and 62 – Good.
