Here is arguably the most important hockey issue of the postwar era, Topps’ 1954 foray into the National Hockey League with a 60-card set featuring the four U.S. hockey teams in the NHL, with 15 players per team picture on the 2 5/8-by-3 ¾-inch cards. The two key singles have been graded by PSA, with Gordie Howe No. 8 graded PSA 5.5 and Terry Sawchuk No. 58 graded PSA 5. This is an impressive NHL artifact from the rough-and-tumble years of the 1950s; overall the offered set comes out to 56 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 39 percent Very Good to VG-Ex and only 5 percent below. The breakdown of keys: No. 1 Gamble – Very Good, 3 Howell – Excellent-Plus, 5 Kelly – Ex-Plus, 10 Worsley – VG-Ex, 11 Bathgate – Ex, 18 Mohns Rookie – Ex, 20 Gadsby – Ex-Mt, 27 Pronovost – Ex, 39 Delvecchio – VG, 41 Stanley – Ex, 51 Lindsay – Ex, 55 Popein – Ex, 56 Laprade – Ex and 60 Schmidt – VG.
