This has got to be one of the most charming non-sport sets ever issued, the 1951 Bowman Jets, Rockets, Spacemen set that features incredible, vivid artwork of science-fiction marvels, from goofy space creatures to fantastic rocket ships, all neatly portrayed on hyper-colorful 2 1/16-by-3 1/8-inch cards that are really mini works of art. The array technically comes out to 16 percent Ex-Mt, 23 percent Excellent and 61 percent Very Good, but it’s worth noting that the vast majority of the Very Good cards actually present a good deal better, closer to Excellent or even Ex-Mt. They wind up with the Very Good designation because of gum staining on the reverse, indicating that the cards probably came from 1-Cent packs that held a single card and piece of gum.
