Presented is an important time from turn-of-the-century baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Evers, the legendary literary collaboration between the eventual Hall of Fame second baseman and arguably the most famous sportswriter of the period, Hugh Fullerton. The sportswriter’s greatest fame was still a decade in the future, when he would play a pivotal role in the revelations surrounding the Black Sox Scandal. The important, 314-page book includes illustrations, charts and diagrams, and presents in Good fashion, with some cracking and paper loss across the title, along with some scuffing. Additionally, there is a wonderful 4-by-6-inch black-and-white photo of Evers across from the title page. It’s truly an intriguing artifact from the earliest days of the 20th century, and also boasts perhaps the longest subtitle in literary history: “Touching Second, The Science of Baseball – The History of the National Game; Its Development into an Exact Mathematical Sport; Records of Great Plays and Players; Anecdotes and Incidents of Decisive Struggles on the Diamond; Signs and Systems Used by Championship Teams.”
