Presented is a true Depression Era scarcity, the unique die-cut National Chicle Batter Up issue, found headlined by several key Hall of Famers in better grades and a significant number of high-series cards. A dozen Hall of Famers headline, including the likes of Depression Era giants like Lefty Grove, Hank Greenberg, Carl Hubbell, Bill Terry, Lefty Gomez and Joe Cronin, among others. The 2 3/8-by-3 ¼-inch First Series cards are actually ¼-inch taller than their Series II counterparts in an array that is pretty evening divided between the two series. While 80 percent of the array would be deemed in Poor condition because of the absence of the top portion of the card, they present vastly better, even Ex-Mt or better and are linked to cards with charming homemade black cardboard or even art textured backgrounds; the collector who engineered all this showed considerable talent and dexterity, even producing color backgrounds to match the blue, green and pink tints on some of the cards. Breakdown of intact cards (9): No. 5 Hubbell – Very Good, 6 Terry (2) – Very Good and Good, 12 – Good, 32 Cronin – Fair, 47 – Fair, 104 Haslin – Near-Mint, 122 Lindstrom – PSA Authentic and 140 – Good. Listing of the remaining cards with homemade backgrounds (36): No. 4, 6 Terry, 12, 22, 23 Gomez, 31 Grove, 43, 44, 46, 51, 54, 56, 57, 60, 63, 66, 68, 74, 77 Manush, 88, 93, 96, 107, 109, 115 Bottomley and Andrews, 120, 121, 123, 132, 152, 160, 175, 179 Bottomley, 187 and 188.
