Here’s one of the truly important issues from an era largely without the traditional candy or gum sets, the 1929 Kashin Publications 3 ½-by-4 ½-inch black-and-white cards that were sold in boxes of 25 to complete the 101-card unnumbered set. A total of 19 Hall of Famers are included in the mix, among them the likes of Charlie Gehringer, Chuck Klein, Mel Ott, Bill Terry, Hack Wilson, Paul Waner and a dozen others; a dozen cards are in PSA slabs and another half-dozen in SGC plastic. The imposing array represents 85 percent of a complete set; the condition breakdown is broadly four percent Near-Mint, 23 percent Ex-Mt, 25 percent Excellent, 31 percent Very Good and 15 percent Good. While the array is missing some of the keys like Ruth, Gehrig, Grove, Hornsby, Simmons, Frisch and Moe Berg, it still represents a great opportunity to pick up a huge portion of a difficult late-1920s issue. The breakdown of slabbed cards (18): Alexander (2) – PSA 6 and 5, Benton – SGC 60, Bottomley – SGC 60, Bush – PSA 5, Carroll – SGC 80, Combs – PSA 3, DeBerry – PSA 6, Douthit – SGC 40, High – PSA 5, Hogan – PSA 5, Jones – SGC 60, Liska – PSA 4, Root – PSA 5 (mk), Joe Sewell – PSA 4, Todt – PSA 2.5, Whitehill – SGC 60 and Zachary – PSA 5. The breakdown of raw keys: Bottomley (2) – Excellent-Plus and Good, Gehringer – Fair, Goslin – Very Good, Hafey – Ex-Mt, Hoyt – VG, Klein – Near-Mint, Maranville – VG, Ott – Good (mk), Roush – Ex-Mt, Ruffing – Fair (mk), Terry – Nr-Mt, Lloyd Waner (2) – Ex-Mt and Ex, Paul Waner – VG-Ex and Wilson – Good.
