Here’s a cool artifact from the Hall of Fame reliever Lee Smith linked to a different discipline, a Cubs batting helmet that also features an autograph from the No. 3 man on the All-Time MLB Saves list. The ABC Cap Co. piece has the foam side padding and circular crown pad, along with royal-blue exterior with cloth red-on-white Cubs “C.” The expected ABC stamped logo is on the back, with Smith’s No. 46 in ¾-inch white marker; dyno tape on the front bill is indecipherable. The ABC sticker is on the crown with Size 7 ¼, with well-aged athletic tape with “46” on the interior. Smith, who wore a flapless batting helmet in the early stages of his career, has autographed and inscribed in broad, black Sharpie strokes on the right side of the helmet, adding his No. 46 inscription (Beckett COA).
