Presented is a simply outstanding specimen from one of the prolific relief pitchers from Major League Baseball from 1955-75, the same period when the very configuration of the specialty underwent dramatic changes that would only accelerate in coming decades. The classic New York Yankees home pinstripe flannel has the seven-button front and the original interlocking “NY” logo appears on the left chest. McDaniel’s No. 40 is also original, with both identifiers in midnight-navy felt zig-zag affixed. The NIC “McDaniel” is in midnight-navy chain stitching on cream felt; Spalding label at the tail has Size 44 label sewn in tandem, along with “Set 1 1969” chain-link flap tag and washing instructions. McDaniel was an important figure in the evolution of the role of relief pitching, like so many others began his career as a starter then switched to relief at a time when the parameters of the specialty was changing. His wise career choices led to a distinguished 21-year career with five teams, logging a 141-119 lifetime mark and 174 Saves, leading his league three times in that department at a time when a bit more than a single frame was expected from relievers.
