Here are three dozen cards from the important 1961 Fleer Basketball issue, an iconic offering that took on particular significance because of its placement between the Topps issues from 1957 and a full 12 years later in 1969. With that unique perch at the dawn of the decade, the issue winds up with an inordinate number of Rookie cards (19 of the 44 regular-issue cards), many of them among the greatest names of the era, including Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Hal Greer, Paul Arizin, Sam Jones and Lenny Wilkens. This array includes Rookie cards of nine Hall of Famers, including several of the aforementioned keys. The group is broadly Good to Very Good, with a few below, and the majority with an mk qualifier that results from a childhood collection where an overly enthusiastic youngster felt compelled to make ballpoint notations on the back about trades, team relocations and even player’s weight loss. The notations are often relatively unobtrusive and are noted in the listing below.
