Presented is a nice example of the unique 1941 Gum Inc. R158 Uncle Sam/Home Defense issue, a unique dual-element issue that showcased the four branches of the U.S. Military and also the civilian defense efforts in attractive, colorful artwork on 2 ½-by-3 1/8-inch cards. The Uncle Sam subset is divided between the various branches of service and is numbered from No. 1-96, with the Home Defense subset focusing on the civilian preparedness aspect as the United States braced for entrance into World War II. It is numbered from No. 96-144, with the offered partial set numbered only to 120, and 18 extras included as well. The second half of the issue from Nos. 121-144 are short printed, creating genuine scarcities for these quirky, coveted cards. The partial set is found here in a condition range fairly consistent with how these non-sport classics are typically encountered in mature collections. The Nos. 1-120 are pretty evenly divided between Very Good and Good, with perhaps a dozen or so below to Fair; the group of 18 extras is in a little rougher condition, closer to Fair to Good.
