Travel back in time almost a half century to pick up three spectacular vending boxes of 1978 Topps Baseball, cards that look precisely as God, or at least Topps, intended, which is to say Near-Mint to Near-Mint to Mint or better. These are incredible cards, with sensational, vivid colors and outstanding gloss, all adorning a lineup of 81 Hall of Famers and an even larger group of the various Specials included in the popular issue. With headliners like Brett, Bench, Carew, Jackson, Munson, Rose, Ryan, Schmidt and dozens of others – often with duplication even among this august group – the 1,500 cards could provide the launch on multiple complete sets or upgrade a similar number of existing ones. The roster also includes nearly two dozen Rookie cards – among them Morris (3), Murphy and Whitaker – plus 12 Checklists (two complete sets), 51 Team cards, 11 Record Breakers (one complete set) and two dozen League Leaders (two complete sets). Here’s the breakdown of HOFers: Anderson (2), Blyleven (2), Brett, Bench (3), Carlton (2), Carew (2), Carter (2), Cox (4), Dawson (2), Eckersley (2), Fingers (2), Fisk (3), Gossage, Herzog (2), Hunter, Jackson, Jenkins (2), Lasorda (2), Lemon (2), McCovey (2), Morgan (2), Munson (2), Niekro (2), Palmer (3), Perez (3), Perry (2), Rose (5), Rice, Ryan (2), Schmidt (2), Stargell, Sutter, Sutton (3), Torre (2), Weaver (2), Williams, Winfield (2) and Yastrzemski.
