Presented is a spectacular original Wirephoto of Detroit Tigers young right-hander Fred Hutchinson, showing his pitching grip that would ultimately lead to MLB success, but in the short term wound up on the cover of one of the most-respected magazines of the time, Baseball Magazine. The 5-by-7-inch Wirephoto is nothing short of outstanding (Near-Mint) and has the newspaper cutline affixed to the back in the traditional fashion. Not bad for a 20-year-old in his sophomore season; he would end a 10-year MLB career – interrupted in his prime by four years in the Navy for World War II – with a 95-71 log and later go on to greater fame as the Cincinnati Reds’ pennant-winning skipper in 1962. For now it’s his pitching grip on the cover of the February 1940 Baseball Magazine, found here in Good condition at 50 pages and some minor paper loss front and back. Curiously, the editors of Baseball Magazine chose to rotate the image of Hutch’s pitching grip 90 degrees, giving it an odd look that perhaps added to the mystique.
