This is an extraordinary opportunity to pick up an attractive example of the Low Series of the iconic 1939 Play Ball issue, the groundbreaking set that helped launch a new era for collectors as World War II approached. This near set of Nos. 1-115, missing only five cards, is broadly Good to Excellent, with just under a dozen cards above to Ex-Mt and only a couple of cards below, yielding a sharp and consistent low-number near set, with a noticeably uniform look, with uncommonly clean backs to boot. Overall, it comes out to 8 percent Ex-Mt, 36 percent Excellent, 37 percent Very Good to VG-Ex, and 15 percent Good. The five missing numbers: No. 6, 22, 25, 26 and 92. The breakdown: No. 1 – Very Good, 3 Ruffing – VG, 7 Doerr – Excellent-Plus, 10 Dean – Ex, 30 Dickey – Good, 35 – Ex-Plus (mk), 38 – Ex-Mt, 39 Ferrell – VG-Ex, 43 – Poor, 48 Gomez – VG-Ex, 50 Gehringer – VG, 51 Ott – VG, 52 Henrich – VG-Ex, 55 Hubbell – Ex-Plus, 55 Vaughan – Good, 56 Greenberg – VG-Ex, 60 Rowe – Ex-Plus, 80 – Ex-Mt, 81 – Ex-Mt, 82 Klein – VG, 88 Keller – Ex-Mt, 89 Waner – Ex-Plus, 94 Manush – Ex-Mt, 103 Berg – Good and 113 Schacht – VG.
