Here’s an amazing trophy from nearly a half-century ago that touches upon many of the biggest names in baseball history from several generations, an “All-Time Fielding Team” assessed by none other than the Baseball Writers of America (BWOA). The 10 ½-inch high trophy boasts a striking 7 ½-inch bronze figural of a baseball glove that is in truly outstanding condition. Affixed to a seven-inch-square wooden base, three inches high, with nameplate engraved with the team members. Not too shabby a group: 1B – Billy Terry, 2B – Bill Mazeroski, SS – Honus Wagner, 3B Pie Traynor, LF – Willie Mays, CF – Joe DiMaggio, RF – Roberto Clemente, LHP Bobby Shantz and RHP Bob Gibson. It’s kind of a charming footnote to point out that the engraver misspelled the name of the best-fielding pitcher of his era, Bobby Shantz, with “Schantz,” performing the rare trifecta of adding an extra letter, then planting it in an odd location, then giving it the permanence of engraving. The engaging trophy is largely problem-free in virtually every respect, save only for some minor pitting on the nameplate that barely detracts from the presentation.
