Arguably one of the greatest Topps football issues from its chaotic early years publishing cards for the gridiron, the 1960 Topps Football set is a marvel with its simple design and blazing sharp photography. This particular offering presents all of those attributes to good effect with an attractive example that combines that remarkable photography with superb gloss and super-clean cards backs. The set grades out to roughly 9 percent Near-Mint, 58 percent Ex-Mt (including many of the key Hall of Famers) and 19 percent Excellent and a dozen or so cards below the range. Perhaps 1/3 of the near set has the kind of centering that might typically prompt thoughts of an upgrade, though not all of those would be severe enough to dictate an off-center designation. The three missing numbers: No. 86 Giants Team, 96 and 113 Tittle. The breakdown: No. 1 Unitas – Ex-Mt o/c, 2 Ameche – Ex-Mt, 3 Moore – Ex-Mt o/c, 4 Berry – Ex-Mt, 5 Parker – Ex-Mt, 17 Jones – Ex-Mt m/c, 23 Brown – Good, 25 Mitchell – Ex-Mt o/c, 46 Schmidt – Ex, 51 Starr – VG-Ex, 52 Taylor – Near-Mint o/c, 54 Hornung – Very Good, 57 Ringo – Fair, 63 Matson – VG-Ex, 72 Conerly – Ex, 74 Gifford – Ex-Plus, 77 Summerall – Ex-Mt o/c, 78 Brown – Ex, 80 Huff – Ex-Plus, 81 Robustelli – Ex-Mt, 87 Bednarik – Nr-Mt o/c, 93 Layne – Ex-Mt o/c, 101 Stautner – Ex-Mt o/c, 114 Perry – Ex-Mt o/c, 116 McElhenny – Ex-Mt, 118 St. Clair – Ex, 121 Nomellini – Ex-Mt and 132 Redskins Team – Ex-Mt o/c.
