Here’s one of Topps’ most unusual, dare we say innovative sets of their fabled tenure producing sports cards, the 1980 Hockey set that embraced a scratch-off theme at a time when lottery tickets of that same genre were just starting to take off. Nobody molested or even touched any of these beauties, though, yielding a pristine 264-card set that is easily Near-Mint to Mint, with perhaps a few Near-Mint cards and with the emphasis to the upper end of the spectrum and not a whisper of any tinkering in any fashion to those clunky black “hockey pucks” that would need to be chiseled away in order to tell who was pictured on the card. Well, maybe not for everyone: presumably the five cards of a second-year superstar Wayne Gretzky and Rookie card of Ray Bourque are identifiable without any such mayhem.
