Like a complementary lot in this auction highlighting Superman, this pristine 1954 Calling Superman game is a delight for fans of the Man of Steel, yet another extraordinary artifact showcasing the big guy in 1954 at what might be called the high point of his mass-market popularity with the incredibly popular television show captivating a generation of youngsters. The colors and graphics are nothing short of sensational on a clearly Ex-Mt-Plus game box that is 17 ½-by-9 inches; the 17-inch-square game board on the inside is even more compelling, with blazing, vivid colors and graphics and a remarkable, pristine gloss that suggests it didn’t get a lot of play over the last 70 or so years. That same observation applies to the game pieces and instructions inside, intact and ready for action, including the two spinners, which work like a charm. The literature included with the game says it best: “Calling Superman is a new exciting game for two to eight adventure-minded "cub reporters." Based upon the famous character Superman, known to millions through TV, radio, and comic strips, it will keep girls and boys interested for hours. Players are assigned to cover sensational front-page stories for the "Daily Planet." They travel by plane, train and car to report the bursting of a dam, a ship in distress and many other important events. When dangerous obstacles block their progress, they may call and receive help from SUPERMAN. The first player to complete the assignments and report back to the "Daily Planet" is the winner.” For fans of the Man of Steel, this is a simply yet another extraordinary artifact showcasing arguably the most famous comic figure of the postwar era, and in bullet-proof condition, no less.
