November 17, 2022: Fall Auction

Presented is a massive group of the quirky 1975-79 Hostess Bakery baseball cards, the charming food issue that matched up major league stars with the delicious Ding Dongs and Twinkies, requiring a generation of youngsters – and, ahem, older collectors – to chase dubious baked goods and then undertake careful scissoring. The offered array – with a good deal of duplication, often involving the HOFers and major stars of the period - boasts mostly decent cutting efforts, often well outside the dotted line or right on it, producing a group that is broadly Good to Excellent, with perhaps several dozen falling below the range due to the dreaded staining. Here’s the breakdown: 1975 Hostess (82) – with 11 Hall of Famers, including Aaron (Fair), Jackson (Fair) and Yount (2); 1976 Hostess (124) – with staining affecting perhaps 1/3 of the array, and including 30 Hall of Famers, like Brett (2), Bench (2 – st), Schmidt (Poor) and Seaver (2 – st); 1977 Hostess (250) – with staining affecting perhaps four dozen, and including 60 Hall of Famers, including Ryan, Schmidt (5), Bench (3), Jackson (3), Rose (2), Brett (2), Yastrzemski (3), Yount, Stargell (2), Munson (2), Seaver (2), Morgan (4), Palmer (2), Carter (3), Fisk (2), Rice (2), Hunter (3), Winfield (4) and Fingers (2); 1978 Hostess (80) – with condition improving a bit in the final two years of the Hostess run, with 15 Hall of Famers, including Bench (2), Jackson (2), Schmidt, Perry (2), Palmer (2), Rice and Carter; and 1979 Hostess (45) – with 14 Hall of Famers, including Schmidt, Seaver (2), Brett, Rose, Niekro (3), Morgan (2), Carlton and Fisk.
