Here’s a Cooperstown-worthy artifact from a Cooperstown-worthy guy, a game-worn Ryne Sandberg Cubs home jersey from his illustrious 1984 MVP season when he batted .314 and led the NL with 19 Triples, all the while leading the Cubbies into the postseason for the first time in a mere 39 years. The blue knit pullover has a custom V-neck with red-and-white accents, same as the collar. The famed circular Cubs logo is on the front in red and blue tackle twill on white, with the Bear Cub logo on the left sleeve in the same fashion. The Wilson Size 42 label with adjacent washing instructions is at the collar along with a blue team swatch tag with “23 84 1 42” in white stitching. A blue swatch “84” is in white stitching at the front tail. The shirt reveals solid wear to go with its startling pedigree. In that glorious year of 1984, only Sandberg’s third in Chicago, he put aside any doubts about the Phillies’ trade that sent him westward, winning his second of nine Gold Gloves, the first of seven Silver Sluggers and making his first of 10 All-Star teams. Twenty-one years later, Cooperstown beckoned.
