March 30, 2023: Spring Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/30/2023
This lot represents an opportunity to pick up a lower-grade version of one of the great peripheral issues of the 1960’s, the Post Cereal baseball cards that were printed as part on the back of cereal boxes and severely challenged the precision scissoring skills of a generation of American youth. In this instance, the cutting effort was fairly typical of how this classic set is found in older collections. Six of the cards in this set are actually from the nearly identical Jello issue of the same year. The cards are broadly in Fair to Ex-Mt condition, with some above and below and presenting in a reasonably consistent fashion in an issue that often makes that aspiration problematic. Overall, it comes out to 26 percent Excellent to Ex-Mt, 14 percent Very Good, 25 percent Good, 30 percent Fair and 6 percent Poor. The 1963 Post Cereal and Jello sets are nearly identical, with the former in the standard 2 1/2-by-3 1/2-inch format and the Jello cards slightly smaller at 3 3/8 inches across. The breakdown of key cards: No. 1 Power – Good, 5 Killebrew – Very Good, 10 Kaat – Fair (erratic cut), 15 Mantle – Good, 16 Maris – Good (erratic cut), 17 Berra – Good, 19 Ford – Ex, 36 Fox – Excellent, 37 Aparicio – Poor, 51 Kaline – Ex, 59 Brooks Robinson – Ex, 80 Yastrzemski – Good (erratic cut), 106 Mays – Ex-Mt-Plus, 109 Marichal – Ex, 112 McCovey – VG, 118 Snider – VG, 123 Drysdale – Fair, 125 Koufax – Good, 131 Frank Robinson – Ex, 143 Clemente – Fair (erratic cut), 151 Mathews – Ex, 152 Aaron – Ex, 166 Gibson – VG, 169 Banks – VG, 172 Williams – Good (erratic cut) and 197 Ashburn – VG.
