March 30, 2023: Spring Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/30/2023
This is an essentially unimprovable group of 1974 Topps Baseball cards from the then-groundbreaking Penny’s sales program that provided complete sets from vending that was a first for Topps after printing the entire set at one time in 1974 after a quarter-century of issuing cards by series from the early spring to late summer. The resulting cards almost seemed like a prescient nod to the ultra snazzy Traded and Updates sets that would arrive in the 1980s, cards with superb color and gloss and a remarkably uniform presentation for the time. There are Near-Mint to Mint blazers, with perhaps a few below, and some cards with the typical centering vagaries linked with vending. The array features 30 Hall of Famers, 130 cards from the Traded subset, 45 Team cards, 17 World Series and Playoff cards, eight All-Stars and a half dozen Checklists. The colorful J.C. Penney’s original box is included, presenting nicely but technically in Fair condition because of a detached flap.
