June 15, 2023: Tobacco Cards Only Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2023
Offered is a coveted Rube Marquard card from one of the difficult early tobacco issues, the 1914 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 2 issue that mimics the images of T206 cards but is markedly rarer. The fact that the cards were produced and distributed almost exclusively in Louisiana only adds to their cachet. This is an example of Portrait New York on Shirt, one of four Marquard variations in the set and the most expensive of the four, found here in an imposing PSA 2.5 holder. The card centering is outstanding; the pastel yellow and green background colors dramatically set off the Portrait image of Marquard, and the “Marquard, New York Nat.,” typeface in blue is one of the distinctive elements that differentiates it from its T206 counterparts. The card back reveals just a tiny bit of light staining.
