June 15, 2023: Tobacco Cards Only Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2023
Offered is an important card from one of the difficult early tobacco issues, the 1914 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 2 issue that mimics the images of T206 cards but is markedly rarer. The fact that the cards were produced and distributed almost exclusively in Louisiana only adds to their cachet. This is a nice example of one of the great Hall of Famers from the turn of the century, a Mordecai Brown Chicago, one of two Brown variations in the set that is found here in an SGC Authentic (Evidence of Trim) holder. The card centering is perhaps 65/35 right to left, with significant staining, toning and creasing on the front, along with the distinctive “Brown, Chicago Nat.,” typeface in blue, one of the distinctive elements that differentiates it from its T206 counterparts, cut off entirely at the bottom. The Coupon Cigarettes back reveals a significant level of staining and toning, along with paper loss that touches perhaps 30 percent of the surface area.
