June 15, 2023: Tobacco Cards Only Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2023
Offered is an important Rube Marquard card from one of the difficult early tobacco issues, the 1914 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 2 issue that mimics the images of T206 cards but is markedly rarer. The fact that the cards were produced and distributed almost exclusively in Louisiana only adds to their cachet. This is an example of Pitching New York, one of four Marquard variations in the set, found here in an SGC 1 holder. The card centering is perhaps 65/35 right to left, with creasing and cracking on the front with some paper loss; the pastel yellow and green background colors showcase the Pitching image of Marquard, and the “Marquard, New York Nat.,” typeface in blue is one of the distinctive elements that differentiates it from its T206 counterparts. The card back reveals a good deal of staining, toning and paper loss.
