June 15, 2023: Tobacco Cards Only Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2023
Offered is an important Rube Marquard card from one of the difficult early tobacco issues, the 1914 T213 Coupon Cigarettes Type 2 issue that mimics the images of T206 cards but is markedly rarer. The fact that the cards were produced and distributed almost exclusively in Louisiana only adds to their cachet. This is an example of Pitching New York, one of four Marquard variations in the set, found here in an SGC Authentic (Altered) holder, with notable staining and dirt on the front. The centering is roughly 65/35 right to left, with an erratic cut to the left side and some extraneous marks. The pastel yellow and green background colors showcase the image of Marquard, and the “Marquard, New York Nat.” typeface in blue is one of the distinctive elements that differentiates it from its T206 counterparts. The card has been affixed to a piece of cardboard with an erratic cut on three sides.
