October 26, 2023: Fall Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2023
Offered here is a solid example of an important Topps issue from the 1970’s, the 660-card 1973 set, found here in a binder in an attractive, consistent presentation of a near set missing about two dozen cards, albeit some of those key Rookie cards. The cards are found here in a condition range a bit broader than might typically be encountered in mature collections, largely Very Good to Ex-Mt, with some above and a few below and the emphasis to Ex-Mt (with a number of Near-Mint cards as well). The roster of missing numbers includes the Mike Schmidt, Bob Boone and Dwight Evans Rookie cards, along with Billy Williams and the All-Time Leaders Subset cards of Cobb (Hits), Gehrig and Cy Young. This was the final time that Topps printed and distributed the cards in series throughout the spring and summer, a format that ruled for more than two decades. The higher numbers are symbolically important because they are the last of the breed, with sets going forward printed all at the same time rather than staggered through the summer. The breakdown: No. 1 Home Run Leaders – Fair, 50 Clemente – Near-Mint o/c, 80 Oliva – Nr-Mt, 90 Brooks Robinson – Ex-Mt-Plus, 100 Aaron – Good, 130 Rose – Nr-Mt o/c, 142 Munson – Very Good, 170 Killebrew – VG, 190 Gibson – Nr-Mt o/c, 193 Fisk – Ex-Mt o/c, 220 Ryan – Good-Plus, 230 Morgan – Ex, 255 Jackson – Ex-Mt-Plus, 257 Berra – Ex-Mt-Plus, 305 Mays – Ex-Mt o/c, 320 Brock – Good, 410 McCovey – Good, 473 Aaron All Time – VG, 474 Ruth All Time – Good and 475 Cobb All Time – VG-Plus.
