If there is a player whose life seemed so big and boisterous that it was more like a fairy tale or something from Uncle Remus than real life, Satchel Paige was it. His 1948 Leaf Rookie card pictures a 42-year-old Negro League legend making his major league debut when most would be retiring from the game, with no explanation required for a story long relegated to the history books. Statistics hardly tell the story of the most famous Black ballplayer of the first half of the 20th century. In his prime his exploits were exalted in hushed tones and elaborate tales that befitted his legendary status; he barnstormed around the country when he wasn’t laboring in the chaotic Negro Leagues or Winter Leagues, bringing fans across the land a glimpse of what was to come after Jackie, and reminding us of the unforgivable sin that a nation had committed against a race of people. This single is graded PSA 2.5 with 90/10 top-to-bottom centering and four lightly rounded corners.
