Batting No. 1 and No. 2 in leading off the final series of the legendary 1952 Topps issue, Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson headlined a subgroup from that iconic issue that was going to make hobby history. Robinson’s spectacular No. 312 in 1952 Topps gives his counterpart’s 1952 Mantle card a good run for its money for its vivid presentation, with a blazing red background that so effectively sets off a memorable image of a smiling Robinson. Just like Mickey’s card and the rest of the High Series, Robby’s No. 312 would earn a scarcity unrivaled in the issue when about 400 cases of the product were unceremoniously dumped into the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island Sound in 1960 because Topps needed the storage space. No sense mourning the hundreds of Robinsons, Mantles, Mathews & Co. lost in this historic moment; the event added a fairy tale quality to a lineup already bigger than life. This single looks undergraded in a PSA 5.5 holder, with really amazing color, solid, but not perfect centering and four corners showing very little wear.
