Presented is a simply spectacular example of the colorful 1961 Fleer Baseball Greats issue, an array that is easily the nicest we’ve ever handled with a pedigree of essentially Near-Mint to Mint or better, with a few Near-Mint and more than three dozen PSA 8 slabs neatly attesting to that claim. The set boasts good centering, wonderful colors and clean, and attractive white card backs with crisp bright-red spot color, all combining to create a stunning, uniform and consistent presentation; it’s worth noting that the vivid front colors even manage to seemingly improve a bit in Series II. As the listing below illustrates, the Tier-One Hall of Famers conform to the wider condition range. This was Fleer’s second production involving mostly Hall of Famers and long-retired stars and the company’s two Baseball Greats sets from 1960 and 1961 remain highly coveted collectibles more than six decades hence. The breakdown: Fully ¼ of the set have been third-party slabbed and authenticated as follows – PSA 8 (36), Nos. 5, 6, 11 Brown, 12, 25 Feller, 26, 28 Foxx, 30 Frisch, 38 Grove, 39, 40, 47, 55 Lombardi, 56, 57 Mack, 58, 60 McGraw, 67, 70 Rice, 75 Ruth, 79 Speaker, 80, 82, 86, 87 Wilson, 93, 102, 105, 107, 110, 113, 123, 131, 135 Plank, 143 and 149 Waddell; plus PSA 7 No. 154, a BVG 7 No. 134 and PSA 6 (st) Hubbell; Breakdown of raw cards: No. 1 Checklist – Near-Mint, 2 Alexander – Nr-Mt, 14 Cobb – Nr-Mt-Plus, 31 Gehrig – Nr-Mt, 49 Johnson – Nr-Mt to Mt, 59 Mathewson – Nr-Mt, 68 Ott – Nr-Mt-Plus, 77 Simmons – Nr-Mt to Mt, 78 Sisler – Nr-Mt to Mt, 85 Paul Waner (2) – Nr-Mt to Mt, 89 Checklist – Nr-Mt, 142 Terry – Nr-Mt to Mt, 144 Traynor – Nr-Mt (Diamond Cut), 150 Wagner – Nr-Mt, 152 Ted Williams – Nr-Mt-Plus and 153 Young – Nr-Mt.
