This is a really nice example of a complete set of perhaps Topps’ most difficult issue ever produced in terms of condition-sensitive borders, the jet-black background that brutally reveals even the slightest dings and nicks. In addition to the 1971 set and 230 duplicates (including some HOFers and Rookies) and another 27 Topps Baseball Supers, the lot features a partial set of 1972 Topps, an array that includes more than two dozen Hall of Famers and a similar number of cards from the difficult High Series. The 1971 set, headlined by an attractive PSA 6 Nolan Ryan, is broadly Very Good to Ex-Mt, with a significant number of specimens above to Near-Mint and some below, with the emphasis probably to Excellent. The breakdown: No. 1 Orioles Team – Fair, 5 Munson – Very Good m/c, 14 Concepcion Rookie (2) – Excellent and VG-Ex, 20 Jackson – VG-Ex, 26 Blyleven Rookie (2) – VG-Ex o/c and Good, 55 Carlton – VG-Plus, 100 Rose (3) – Ex o/c, VG and Good, 117 Simmons Rookie – Ex-Plus, 180 Kaline – VG-Ex, 210 Carew – Ex-Plus, 300 Brooks Robinson – VG-Ex m/c, 341 Garvey Rookie – VG-Plus, 400 Aaron – VG-Ex, 450 Gibson – VG-Plus, 525 Banks – Ex-Mt-Plus, 550 Killebrew – Near-Mint, 625 Brock – Ex-Mt-Plus, 630 Clemente – Ex o/c and Baker/Baylor Rookie – Good; 1971 Topps Baseball Supers (27) – Nice Ex-Mt to Near-Mint array, including the likes of Aaron, Stargell, Rose, Torre, Seaver, Gibson, Santo and Piniella (3). The 1972 partial set (412) is broadly Very Good to Ex-Mt, with some above and below the range, with the emphasis probably to Excellent. It features more than two dozen Hall of Famers, including the likes of Mays, Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Palmer, McCovey, Santo, Torre, Williams, Durocher, Hodges and many more, plus more than two dozen cards from the difficult High Number Series. 1972 Topps (412) – No. 1 Pirates Team, 37 Yastrzemski – Very Good, 49 Mays – VG-Ex, 100 Franks Robinson, 270 Palmer – Good (mk), 280 McCovey, 299 Aaron – Excellent-Plus, 300 Aaron In Action – Ex-Mt-Plus, 310 Clemente In Action – VG-Ex, 430 Bench – Good, 441 Munson – VG-Plus, 446 Seaver In Action – Ex-Mt-Plus, 550 Brooks Robinson – Ex-Plus, 600 Kaline – VG, 695 Carew – VG, 753 McLain Traded – Good, 754 Frank Robinson Traded – VG, plus 33 In Action cards, nine (9) League Leaders, 11 World Series or Playoffs subset cards, 10 Rookies, nine (9) Team cards, five (5) Boyhood and nine (9) Checklists (mk).
