Here’s an incredible card of the great Roberto Clemente from one of the cool Topps peripheral issues from the mid-1960s, the oversized Topps Giants cards that were issued as a separate offering since they obviously were too big for insert duty. One of the hallmarks of the popular 3 1/8-by-5 ¼-inch Giants was standout photography, with numerous instances where collectors might have wondered why some of the images hadn't made it to the regular-issue Topps sets. Such is the case with this Near-Mint to Mint No. 11 Clemente, a card with crisp colors, great photography and gloss, all nicely centered and almost begging for encapsulation. For several decades after its release, the Topps Giants were regarded as a grand alternative means of getting spectacular cards of Tier One Hall of Famers and major stars at relatively affordable prices. Alas, these days you'll have to be a bit more, uh, flexible when shopping … or bidding.
