October 24, 2024: Fall Auction

Offered is an imposing group of nine complete sets of the 1984 Topps Baseball issue, and one boasting the important Rookie cards of Don Mattingly and Darryl Strawberry, two youngsters taking the Big Apple by storm at the time and seemingly headed upstate to Cooperstown when the curtain came down on their careers. This huge group is pretty uniformly Near-Mint to Near-Mint to better, with a few Near-Mint and exceptional color and gloss and super-clean card backs; with new competitors in the arena, Topps seemed to up its game in the 1980s with the arrival of competitors in the business with larger checklists and seemingly sharper photography and more vivid and crisp colors. There is no discernible difference between the Tier One Hall of Famers and the rest of the gang; there are the occasional off-center cards that would typically be encountered in issues yielded in total or in part from vending. Several of the sets in the array display the iconic “vending bend” that so eloquently announces that these are uncirculated cards. The 1984 Topps issue (792) presents in a stunning, uniform and consistent fashion, a consistency that extends to each of the nine offered sets.
