Offered is an extraordinary piece constituting one of the treasured artifacts from 1950s Topps baseball curriculum, an uncut sheet of its classic 1956 set, found here in a 50-card grouping that presents wonderfully despite having some of the common condition foibles typically encountered in an item nearly 70 years old. Roberto Clemente’s second-year Topps card headlines along with fellow Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Warren Spahn and Ernie Banks, along with a number of great stars and All-Stars from the period like Ted Kluszewski, Moose Skowron, Ken Boyer, Roy Sievers, Dick Groat, Gene Freese and Gus Triandos, to name a few. The 19-by-26 ¼-inch sheet presents nicely with a Fair technical grade due to significant corner wear and some paper loss. An 8-by-11-inch advertising sheet is affixed near the center of the front and covers nine cards from viewing. Some of the card fronts have the kind of small tears or light staining often found in vintage uncut sheets, including the important second-year Koufax card, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson (small stain) and Kluszewski (corner loss – Fair); the key Clemente card is seemingly without any condition issues. For some of the card backs there is light paper loss or adhesive residue touching Banks, Boyer, Amoros, Sievers, Groat, Valo, Triandos and Freese. That noted, the piece remains a spectacular artifact showcasing many of the key cards from an iconic Topps baseball issue, the company’s last effort in the larger 2 5/8-by-3 ¾-inch format before changing to the now-standard 2 ½-by-3 ½-inch size.
