Presented is an extraordinary accumulation of the original pen-and-ink artwork of the fabled hobby artist R.G. Laughlin, a grouping of his popular Famous Feats and Great Feats series that included sets self-published by the artist and others with his fabled joint ventures with card maker Fleer. In addition to the five dozen pieces of original art, the lot includes some full-color proof sheets that are likewise suitable for framing. One of the pasteup boards includes names like Ruth, Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Foxx, Alexander, Dean, Grove, Hornsby, Joe Jackson, Klein, Mack, Mathewson, Ott, Simmons, Sisler, Walsh, Wilson (2) and Young (2) who turn up usually by virtue of those aforementioned Famous Feats. There is also a full-color, uncut 18-by-23-inch Famous Feats Series Two proof sheet (40) that is blank backed and presents in Ex-Mt fashion with a small tear. In all, there are pasteup boards ranging in size from 13-by-20 inches to 16-by-12 inches hosting dozens of originals in their original camera-ready glory. Most of the original drawings are about 4-by-5 inches, birthing cards that were typically 2 5/8-by-3 ½ inches and 2 5/8-by-4 inches. Between his collaborations with Fleer and his self-published classics, his card sets were a welcome staple for several generations of hobbyists who didn’t know where to turn once they finished building their annual Topps entry. This amazing group of original drawings was obtained directly from the artist, creating an unmatched historical archive for this legendary hobby figure.
