Perhaps the most condition sensitive issue Topps produced in a decade, the 1971 black borders are always notoriously difficult in terms of easily showing even the slightest wear. This grouping is largely Good to Excellent, but with several dozen cards above that overall range, including Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt. A couple of the checklist cards have been marked and the stars tend to conform to the overall condition range, with some exceptions noted – 350 Ted Williams – Nr-Mt o/c, 513Ryan – Ex-Mt o/c, 530 Yastrzemski – Nr-Mt o/c, and 600 Mays – VG. There are several spots through the issue with nice runs of essentially Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt cards.
