For many (most?) bidders, this lot will represent the largest accumulation of a single year of Topps cards they have likely ever seen, and certainly not in the blazing, Nr-Mt to Mt, essentially uncirculated condition. Largely divided between 1979-80, the cards present in spectacular fashion, and amazing accumulation of stunning duplicate numbers in many cases but still an array that features Hall of Famers, stars, minor stars and Specials. While there doesn’t seem to be any appreciable condition differences between the bulk lots and the 17 vending boxes offered here, the vending boxes appear to be presumably searched to the extent of having major stars removed, though some Hall of Fames and other stars remain.
The breakdown: 1978 Topps (approximately 2,800), mostly Ex-Mt to Nr-Mt with the emphasis to the upper end of the scale, including some Hall of Famers, stars and Specials (also includes 56 mostly Ex to Ex-Mt wrappers); 1979 Topps (7,700), mostly Nr-Mt or Nr-Mt to Mt, with about 340 Specials, 225 Team cards, 100 Checklists and a half dozen Ex to Ex-Mt wrappers; 1980 Topps (8,875), about 375 of which is a star grouping with about a dozen Hall of Famers and most of the rest stars and minor stars, with the balance of about 8,500 cards being in the traditional Topps 500-count vending boxes. As noted, these seem to be in the normal uncirculated shape, with major stars likely the only searching done, so we are talking about 17 vending boxes being largely untouched, but with some HOFers, stars and minor stars still included in the mix.
